It’s February which means that the sun is preparing to pierce through the clouds in a few months and unleash its magic to the western hemisphere. We couldn’t be happier about the news. We look forward to spending hours on end by the beach basking in the sun. After all, it has a ton of benefits for the body including the famous vitamin D which is great for bones, teeth, and skin. The sun also boosts levels of serotonin, a component that has been known to alleviate anxiety making you a happier, healthy individual.

To really glow during summer, having a sun-kissed tan is a great idea. It awakens your beauty and makes your skin look amazing. Some beauty experts actually claim that a golden-brown tan also helps you look slimmer—in a good way.

Before you adorn that sun-kissed glow, however, there are certain things you should keep in mind. Below are 5 tips and tricks to get that perfect tan and stand out from the crowd.

Long before you decide to have a tan, you should think about protection. This is a vital step of the process unless you want to attract skin cancer and an array of other skin issues. While you are at it, think beyond your usual sunscreen. Sure, sunscreen is part of the package but to really protect your skin, consider looking for something more. Check the bottle for the terms “UVA Logo” and “broad spectrum”. This will protect you from both UVA and UVB rays. Additionally, be sure to apply the correct amount (about one teaspoon for the face and neck region) and re-apply after every two hours.
